Position Summary

 Serve as strategic academic and operational leader of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program by providing leadership for the faculty in terms of program development, accreditation self-study, curriculum, administration, teaching, research, and service. The Directors for the DPT, OTD, and ELM-AT programs will work cooperatively in the development of the respective health sciences programs. The Director coordinates Health Science initiatives with leaders of other IWU academic and operational units to achieve the University’s mission. The Director will be employed full time by the University and will not engage in gainful employment outside the institution.

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Understand and support the mission and values of Indiana Wesleyan University to faculty, staff, students, and the community at large.
  2. Support interprofessional education as described in establishing the Distinctives by working with the SON and the Directors of other Health Sciences programs to incorporate joint courses into the curriculum of each program.  
  3. Leads the faculty and development team in strategic planning and monitors the process to further the program’s mission in teaching, research, service, and patient care.
  4. Teach up to 6 hours of doctoral level instruction per semester in the DPT program.
  5. Plans and coordinates Physical Therapy meeting agendas and notifies appropriate individuals of scheduled meetings.
  6. Provide direct oversight for all academic and administrative matters concerning the development of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
  7. Supervise the process of seeking, achieving, and maintaining all necessary CAPTE program accreditation.
  8. Stay engaged in professional development to remain current and maintain licensure.
  9. Assist the University in developing, implementing, and evaluating its long-range/strategic plans for health sciences education.
  10. Ensure that the Physical Therapy faculty is involved with research and scholarly activity.
  11. Prepare the Physical Therapy Program annual budget for submission to the Dean and University Office of Financial Affairs, and monitor and approve its fiscal activities.
  12. Ensure that the Physical Therapy facility continues to meet the educational, functional and maintenance needs of the faculty, students, and staff.
  13. Lead and engage in the recruitment and negotiations of prospective academic faculty and staff.
  14. Make final recommendation to the Dean, Provost and President of all Health Science faculty appointments.
  15. Negotiate contracts for current academic faculty and staff and ensure equitable workloads.
  16. Guide the assessment of curricula and the utilization of data to improve instructional quality and institutional effectiveness.
  17. Assist the University Relations staff with external funding and fund-raising.
  18. Mentor faculty and students to promote their growth and development.
  19. Evaluate annually the effectiveness of the Physical Therapy program to make improvements in faculty, facilities, and curriculum.
  20. Review faculty and staff evaluations, as necessary, with the Dean, including all substantive matters relating to policies, rules, regulations, and disciplinary actions.
  21. Evaluate the effectiveness of all Physical Therapy personnel reporting directly to him or her on an annual basis.
  22. Develop collaborative relationships with educational and health care institutions, clinics, and professionals.
  23. Oversee and manage the faculty and staff and assure yearly evaluations are performed.
  24. Sign all affiliation agreements of educational partners approved by the University.
  25. Approve the selection and purchase of required texts and equipment.
  26. Sign Physical Therapy Student Performance Evaluation Letter (Dean’s Letter) for all graduates.
  27. Approve the students recommended for matriculation in conjunction with the Admissions Committee.
  28. Attend and present at Board of Trustees meetings as requested.
  29. Serve as an ambassador to the medical community and state and national Physical Therapy associations.
  30. Travel to appropriate professional meetings and conferences, seminars, etc.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates the ability to make well informed decisions, solve problems and coordinate a broad range and volume of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of computer programs related to office communication, databases, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Highly organized and able to attend to detail.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: An earned doctorate (PhD, EdD, DPT or equivalent in a related field) from an accredited program

Certification and Licensure: Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physical Therapist in Indiana and have current certification

Experience: A minimum of five years full-time experience teaching in a collegiate academic setting, physical therapy clinical experience with demonstrated expertise, and a proven record of leadership and achievement in an academic environment.  Familiarity with and ability to work with CAPTE accreditation standards
