Retail Underwriting

Scope Statement

The Underwriter maintains Company profitability through favourable mortality by reviewing and assessing the financial risk of individual life insurance applications. The incumbent is guided by defined procedural constraints and works under the moderate supervision of the Manager, Underwriting.

Impact Statement

  • Assesses risk to an approval limit of $500,000 for individual life policies
  • Ensures individual insurance coverage decisions are made in a timely manner and communicated to the appropriate team members
  • Provides sound risk assessments and related support to Empire Life and the Retail New Business Processing unit

Responsibilities include

  • Assesses the mortality and risk to the Company of insurance applications by using medical and financial information
  • Support and provide a high level of customer service to our customers and distribution partners via telephone and email
  • Provides support to the sales team in the management of the distribution relationship
  • Interacts with reinsurance providers to spread risks on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit
  • Consults with senior underwriters, medical consultants, or the Manager, Retail Underwriting on any questionable situations

Knowledge / Experience / Certification

  • 3 – 5 years work experience in individual insurance or a business environment
  • 1 – 2 years experience as Individual Underwriting Trainee
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet and database computer software
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
  • Working towards ALU, FLMI

Education / Professional Courses

  • Completion of a university degree in life sciences, nursing or kinesiology
  • UND 386
