Description of position

The Data Quality Analyst is responsible for translation of business rules and data requirements into logical data validation rules in support of various data structures and analytical systems.  This role ensures validation rules reflect appropriate business rules and facilitates data conformity and data integrity.  Additionally, they ensure that validation rules are designed for flexibility to support future business needs and enhancements.  The Data Quality Analyst must understand the relationships across business information and units for data while collaborating with data stewards, business analysts, and business stakeholders to identify data usage patterns and formulate validation rules for data elements during the project conversion phase. In addition, chosen candidates will partner closely with data stewards and data quality developers/analysts to provide relevant analysis, outputs, and results to determine need and migration requirements for ongoing validation and procedures that will run after project-end. Primary tasks will include reviewing and critiquing data validation rules produced by others, participating in walkthroughs and audits, and ensuring appropriate documentation is produced at all points in the process. Ideal candidates will work closely data stewards, data quality developers/analysts, and business analysts demonstrating the ability to partner and maintain confidence as it relates to coordinating disparate information while being able to translate for IS consumption.  In addition, the selected candidate will need to be flexible as we grow and transform this new area within Costco.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Present profiling/audit results, in summary and in detail, to the business analyst, data steward, and project management

  • Identify, analyze and report data issues, related to uniqueness, integrity, accuracy, consistency and completeness

  • Assist the business analyst/project manager/data steward in defining or modifying the project plan based on these results

  • Assist the data stewards and development teams in designing source-to-target mappings

  • Perform activities related to source data analysis, data discovery, and data profiling

  • Maintain data validation documents that define technical data specifications and rules

  • Adopt quality validation practices to include following an appropriate methodology by contributing to establishing department standards and procedures

  • Pursue continuous improvements based on lessons learned and industry best practices in consideration for data integrity and data quality

  • Ensure work product deliverables are accurate and delivered on a timely basis

  • Participate in both business and IT planning in the development and management of project plans

  • Propose risk mitigation with data solutions and objectives based on the goals and risks associated with business and technical requirements

  • Design and execute the data validation rules that will cleanse, de-duplicate, and otherwise prepare project data for subsequent phases

  • Document all plans in detail and hand-over documentation to project and operational team stakeholders

  • Assist in areas relating to the use of data validation processes

  • Ensure quality of data validation through partnering with data stewards and data quality developers/analysts in identification of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Participate with IS data teams to profile, analyze, and provide contributory input to produce solutions that will impact database models, business policy, and data quality

  • Provide advice to senior management and colleagues through data validation processes, acting as a liaison between the business and IS

  • Interact with technical teams and industry sources to stay involved and abreast of emerging technologies

  • Participate in project data migration activities through identification of data sources and targets

Required skills, abilities, and certifications

  • Required experience working with SAP Information Steward and Data Services

  • Required experience developing and running SQL queries

  • Financial, payroll, and/or human resources data background preferred

  • Experience working with X-Analysis and familiar with Costco databases preferred

  • Understanding of Costco’s business areas, including practical knowledge of the organizational structure preferred
