The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a nonprofit scientific and charitable organization founded in 1996 whose mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world. IAVI's work focuses on four areas: accelerating scientific progress; mobilizing public support through issue advocacy and education; encouraging industrial involvement in AIDS vaccine development; and working to assure global access to a vaccine. Job Title: Director, Global Communications

The Director, Global Communications, will be responsible for the development of a high performing global Communications team and of a new and global external communication strategy for IAVI in support of the organization’s mission and objectives. The strategy will address traditional print and broadcast media as well as new or social media. The Director will lead the development of the media positioning of IAVI and its top executives, including the CEO, and of key message, and will identify and pursue relevant media. He or she will support other teams and departments including Resource Mobilization, Research and Development and the Executive Office; oversee IAVI’s website and manage the day-to-day activities of the global communications team. He or she will also be responsible for the development of an internal communication strategy in support of an increased understanding of and engagement in IAVI’s transformation. The Director will work closely with IAVI’s Policy and Advocacy team and report to the Executive Director of Advocacy, Policy and Communications (APC).
•Lead, manage and develop a high performing global communications team that collaborates effectively with other global teams and departments in supporting regional and country teams. Dotted-line management of regional and local communications staff.
•Work with the Executive Director, APC, to create a new and global media strategy, and oversee its regional and local implementation in support of the new strategy to mobilize the resources required to fulfill the mission of IAVI. Work closely with IAVI’s donors, in-country partners, staff and contracted agencies in Europe, Africa, Latin America, North America and Asia to adapt the strategy to the regional and national level and coordinate media outreach.
•Establish and maintain trusted and effective relationships with media, including top tier reporters in expert, business and lay media
•Raise the profile and share of voice of IAVI and its top executives, including the CEO, and be their trusted media counsel and advisor. Identify and create key communications opportunities for the CEO and other top executives.
•Work with the Executive Director, APC, as well as the Advocacy, Policy and Communications teams, to identify and prioritize key audiences and to develop, tailor and regularly revise key IAVI messages.
• Ensure attractive and effective global reporting through press releases, web statements, opinion pieces (including blogs, op-eds, and letters-to-the-editor) and one-on-one briefings with journalists. Promote important IAVI developments, taking into account the requirements of donors and partners.
•Oversee the upgrading and management of IAVI’s website as a primary source of information on AIDS vaccine R&D generally while at the same time communicating IAVI’s contributions to the field. Oversee the exploration and use of new and social media tools to enhance the delivery of IAVI messages.
•Establish and manage speakers’ bureau of IAVI internal and external spokespeople for key audiences and events; be the trusted communications counsel and advisor, and develop and ensure regular media and presentation training.
• Ensure the maintenance of a comprehensive, up-to-date list of all relevant media. Oversee the upgrading and management of IAVI’s photograph and video libraries.
•Ensure the monitoring and measurement of the impact of these messages through media coverage, speaking engagements, the engagement of external validators, etc.
•Work with the Executive Director, APC and other IAVI colleagues to develop or promote IAVI events. Manage media outreach for all major conferences and meetings.
•Represent the Communications department on internal IAVI teams as requested and participate in external communications working groups within the HIV prevention and vaccine fields and represent IAVI at meetings and conferences.
• Work with the Executive Director, APC, as well with Human Resources and the CEO to develop and implement and internal communication strategy to enhance the understanding of and the engagement in IAVI’s new strategy and the related changes. Ensure improved internal news and information flow.
The successful candidate will:
•Possess an undergraduate degree in Communications or a closely related field, advanced degree advantageous;
•Have at least eight to ten years of hands-on experience in working with the media and in relationship building and management with reporters, including top tier, in all types of media, including business and lay, with a preference for journalistic experience, as well as for both U.S. and international experience;
•Have a proven track record in C-suite communication, including CEO media positioning.
•Have strong and proven skills in people leadership and management;
•Be an excellent facilitator between different expertise, functions and cultures, both listening and assertive; be able to identify and engage critical internal and external stakeholders in common goals;
• Have strong story telling skills; can develop comprehensive narratives, appealing content, clear messages and effective slogans, and can translate complex issues for broader audiences;
•Be abreast of latest trends in the media, including new and social media, and demonstrate sound judgment in their use to develop and manage an organizational branding and reputation;
•Feel a commitment to IAVI’s mission;
•Be comfortable working as part of a small team;
•Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment;
•Think creatively and with long-term objectives.
