Population Served:  Patients, families, visitors and volunteers, co-workers and physicians and outside vendors and other agencies.

JOB SUMMARY
The occupational therapist uses activity as the primary modality in the treatment of functional disorders resulting from illness or injury. Treatment goals include restoring the highest level of functional independence in activities of daily living (ADL) including self-care, homemaking, work and leisure activities in accordance to the physician’s prescription. Occupational therapy also uses therapeutic exercise, splinting and modalities to treat upper extremity illness and injuries.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supports Bartlett Regional Hospital’s strong commitment to the highest standards of business and professional ethics.  Provides services in compliance with all state and federal laws governing the hospital’s operations.  Consistently maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, employee, computer or other information which might jeopardize the privacy of others.  Works as a team member to meet patient and departmental goals.

 

1. PATIENT CARE

  • Evaluates patients, plans and schedules individual occupational therapy programs.  In addition to physical and functional evaluation, considers patient’s age and mental status and disposition in program planning.
  • Meets documentation standards for patient care, including evaluations, daily notes, insurance forms (Medicare 700/701) and discharge summaries.
  • Assesses functional status in ADL, trains in ADL, provides adaptive equipment and/or modifications as needed to maximize functional independence.
  • Uses and maintains a variety of equipment such as, but not limited to: electrical stimulation, ultrasound, paraffin, hot/cold packs, splinting materials and supplies, BTE, UBE and adaptive devices.
  • Gives instruction in posture control, body mechanics and upper extremity therapeutic exercises and procedures to be continued by patient at home.  In cases of pediatric, aged, or mentally impaired, includes parent or caregiver in instructions.
  • Consults with the physician regarding treatments and progress, and documents evaluation, assessment, plan of care, treatments, and response to treatment in patient’s medical record.
  • Bills patients appropriately per department policies.
  • Demonstrates competency in areas of Ergonomics, Driving Screening and Low Vision.
  • Communicates well with patients and other providers as needed.

3. QUALITY MANAGEMENT

  • Maintains the quality and safety of the Physical Rehabilitation Department and staff.
  • Promotes the Culture of Safety with safe ergonomics and safe lifting techniques at BRH.
  • Participates in chart audits and other measures of quality.
  • Helps maintain patient educational handouts and Exercise Pro.
  • Participates in regular Continuing Education opportunities to improve and learn new skills.


DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in Discharge Planning meetings and performs PT/OT/ST Courtesy Evaluations (screenings).
  • Helps train and orient new department staff.
  • Assist in inventory and supply ordering as needed.
  • Works with support staff for scheduling and department maintenance as needed.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and provide in-service to staff after completing continuing education.
  • Helps maintain departmental financial viability.
  • • May provide directions for Rehab Aides, Students and Volunteers.


SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates on hospital/department ad hoc committees/teams and projects.
  • Participates in professional and/or community organizations.
  • Conducts/participates in training medical, nursing and other Hospital personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives.
  • Provides evaluation of life skills for mental health patients on occasion.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Graduate of an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) approved School of Occupational Therapy

License: Current Alaskan Occupational Therapy License in good standing

Experience/Skills/Abilities:  1 year OT experience preferred.  Prefer experience with diverse populations including inpatient CCU, acute and rehab as well as outpatient services. Must be computer literate and have good communication skills.

Physical Demands: Continuous lifting and pushing of up to 10 pounds. Occasional lifting and pushing up to 35 pounds. Occasional maximum assistance transfers exceeding 100 pounds (1 or 2 person transfers). Vision and hearing accuracy with or without Assistive devices. Good eye-hand coordination; high level of general coordination.

Hazardous Exposure/Working Conditions: Uses universal precautions for patient care and safe lifting techniques.
