Description

Institute Overview

Our mission at the Allen Institute for Brain Science is to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling and theory.

We publicly share the knowledge, data and tools we create for the purpose of making an impact, hastening progress throughout the global scientific community toward discoveries that bring real-world utility. Our data and associated tools are openly available online via the Allen Brain Atlas data portal at www.brain-map.org.

Program Overview

The Allen Institute is offering exciting internship opportunities across all areas of our research institute! Whether focused on one of our major research initiatives or part of a core science department that works across all of our initiatives, interns will be working side by side with some of the world’s leading scientists! If you are looking for an internship outside of science, we also have opportunities with our business operations teams. The internship will run from June17 – August 23. We currently have opportunities in the following areas:

Research programs:

  • Cell Types – identifying and characterizing the cellular building blocks in the brain
  • Molecular Networks – deciphering the molecular codes driving development and disease
  • Neural Coding – deciphering the physiologic signals and circuitry responsible for brain functions such as perception and behavior

Core science departments that serve all research programs:

  • Annotation – including neuroanatomy
  • Structured Science – including methods development and data generation on a large scale
  • Technology – including software engineering and informatics

Other departments:

  • Facilities
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology (IT)

Students will be matched with mentors and projects based on degree of experience and mutual interests.  In addition to working on a specific project, Allen Institute interns will meet regularly as a group in sessions designed to augment their research experience.  These meetings could include sessions aimed at improving communication skills, opportunities to share their projects with peers, and discussions with Allen Institute scientists and staff representing different disciplines within the organization. At the end of the program, each intern will write up a project summary and give a presentation summarizing their work.
