About the Location: The Joffre Manufacturing petrochemical complex is located approximately 20 minutes east of Red Deer, Alberta. Red Deer is situated midway between Alberta’s two largest cities – Calgary and Edmonton – and has the amenities of a big city with a smaller population.
Each year our three ethylene facilities produce more than six billion pounds of ethylene, and our two polyethylene facilities produce more than two billion pounds of polyethylene.

Responsibilities: NOVA Chemicals is working with a US based engineering firm to engineer and construct a Gas Phase Reactor (R3) expansion of our Polyethylene 1 facility in Joffre. In order to complete this significant project, we are seeking a qualified Instrumentation Engineer/Technologist. This permanent position will initially be for a project role assignment with a roll-over to a site based role after project completion in 2015. Travel will be required between Red Deer and Houston during the project design & execution.

As a member of the R3 Project Team, you will coordinate the development of engineering plans, specifications and construction concepts to comply with NOVA Chemicals’ loss prevention and engineering standards. You will support the Engineering & Procurement company in their detail design phase and review their designs and documentation for compliance with NOVA standards and with maintenance, reliability & operational requirements in mind.

Qualifications: You will be an Engineer, Instrument Technologist or a Journeyman Instrumentation trades person with a minimum of 10 years related experience, ideally both in an operating plant environment as well as with an EPC.

You will have:
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams.
• Strong working knowledge of field instrumentation systems in a DCS control environment.
• A working knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems.
• Familiarity with Canadian Electric Code, intrinsically safe design principles
• I/E design experience.
• Knowledge of, or familiarity with PLC programming requirements
• Ability to manage your workload with minimal supervision, managing multiple project demands and tasks in a dynamic work environment.
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage competing priorities from different groups
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and to consider multiple aspects in problem solving (e.g. economic, operating, maintenance, technical) in your area of responsibility.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Registered or eligibility for P.Eng or C.E.T. (Certified Engineering Technologist) or R.P.T. (Registered Professional Technologist) certification or equivalent would be an asset
