Job Title:  Senior Modeling Engineer, Material Flow Engineering

 

The Role:

The Sr. Modeling Engineer working on the Material Flow Engineering Team will be an experienced professional responsible for developing material flow models that provide solutions for designing, engineering and implementing new technologies for quick and efficient flow of parts from dock to warehouse to point-of-consumption.  These technologies will initially be planned and implemented at the Tesla Factory located in Fremont, California, but will eventually be implemented in all factories built by Tesla globally.  The primary objectives of the Material Flow Engineering team will be to reduce overall vehicle build cycle time, while optimizing space, improving labor productivity, and creating a more ergonomic work environment for Tesla’s associates.  This position will report to the Senior Staff Engineer of Material Flow Engineering.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Function as an experienced modeler in the area of manufacturing material flow modeling to

support the dramatic improvement of material flows through the factory using advanced

modeling tools and methodologies. The design scope includes material arrival at docks through

delivery to line-side locations. The focus will be on developing innovative new solutions for

manufacturing that leverage automated systems.

  • Development and validation of small and medium-sized material flow systems using computer-aided technologies such as discrete-event simulation, material flow analysis and optimization within the 2D and 3D space
  • Create 3D material flow layout visualizations and animations using advanced modeling software
  • Support Project Engineers within the Material Flow Engineering department with model development and analysis
  • Support the roll-out of the Plan For Every Part (PFEP) database and extend implementation for upcoming programs
  • Investigate and recommend commercial software tools for material flow modeling and analysis
  • Develop methodologies and tools to reduce the lead time for material flow modeling and analysis

 

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or similar

  • 8+ years of experience in manufacturing, supply chain and/or distribution and logistics experience desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with material flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems
  • Working knowledge of material flow methodologies including sequencing, kitting, repack, etc.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing concepts with the ability to model highly efficient lean material flow systems
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage several projects at the same time in a highly variable and uncertain environment
  • Proficiency in building and running material flow and discrete-event simulation models in the 2D and 3D space
  • Understanding of material flow concepts such as Lean Manufacturing, Factory Physics, Theory of Constraints and Plan For Every Part (PFEP)
  • Proficiency in manipulating and creating drawings with AutoCAD software
  • Natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of statistics and corruptive effects of uncontrolled variation of systems over time.
  • Experience in mining, collecting, cleansing and analyzing data from enterprise shop floor execution systems such as WMS or MES
  • Knowledge of integrated, enterprise software and database systems that support the overall Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Business or related program preferred
  • Knowledge of material handling systems in a manufacturing or distribution system environment
  • Solid 3D modeling software experience
  • Robotic programming and automated work cell design experience
  • Basic understanding of control systems
