Position Profile

 

Status:  Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS), non-exempt

 

Salary:  Starts at $11.00 per hour

 

Location: Maintenance Facility, Eden Prairie

Hours:  Typically 7:00am-3:30pm shift; occasional overtime may be required.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Supervisor / Manager within the Parks & Natural Resources Division or Public Works Department

 

Park & Natural Resources Division

The Parks and Natural Resources Division is responsible for providing the citizens and users of the City’s park system with safe, properly maintained, and high quality facilities.  The Division is responsible for developing and maintaining the park and open space system with facilities that meet the community needs. Wildlife, forestry and natural resources management are a top priority of this division.

The Public Works Department

The Public Works Department is comprised of Engineering, the Water Treatment Plant, Utility Field Operations, Street Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Environmental Services. The department is responsible for the environmental management, design, construction, and maintenance of the street, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the community. 

 

Position Details

The Maintenance Technician accomplishes tasks within a team environment to provide the citizens of Eden Prairie and other users of the City with safe and properly maintained parks and/or facilities. Maintenance Technicians will be assigned to one of the following divisions: Parks, Utilities, Streets or Fleets.

Parks Maintenance Technicians have the following areas of impact:

  • Maintaining park grounds (i.e. landscaping, planting, mowing, turf maintenance, and tree removal and the City trail system (i.e. construction, inspection, repair, and mowing).
  • Installing and/or maintaining park amenities (i.e. playground equipment, basketball courts, ice rinks, tennis courts, volleyball courts and picnic areas).
  • Supporting special user groups or events, such as youth athletic associations or city recreation programs, by preparing fields and/or park facilities.
  • Ensuring safety of all users through continual inspection of park property and amenities.
  •  

Utilities Maintenance Technicians have the following areas of impact:

  • Demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of maintenance activities (i.e. using hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment including pickups, dump trucks, jetting vactor trucks, skid steer loaders, backhoes, chop saws, air compressors and assorted air tools).
  • Maintaining the sanitary system by clearing blockages and inspecting and repairing the existing sewer system.
  • Maintaining the public water distribution system by inspecting, repairing and replacing water mains, fire hydrants, valves, water tower equipment and all associated appliances.
  • Inspecting and repairing catch basins, manholes, outlets and storm lift stations.
     

Streets Maintenance Technicians have the following areas of impact:

  • Using strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of maintenance activities (i.e. using hand, power and heavy equipment including pickups, trucks, compressor/air tools, skid steer loader, and backhoe).
  • Demonstrates safe equipment operation and working conditions in traffic on City streets.
  •  

Preventative Maintenance Technicians have the following areas of impact:

  • Completing preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment by utilitizing strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of maintenance activities (i.e. preventative maintenance on vehicles, oil changes, mounting and balancing tires).
  • Assisting mechanics and inventory control as needed (i.e. replaces necessary parts, responds to service calls, and the cleaning and upkeep of the maintenance facility).

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

 

Position Requirements

Education: High school degree or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.

Work Experience: Must be 18 years or older; related experience preferred.

Technical Skills: Familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel) preferred.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to frequently lift/carry/pull up to 30-50 lbs, and work under all weather conditions.

Pre-Employment Process

The City of Eden Prairie conducts professional reference, criminal history checks, driver’s check (must have valid Driver’s License and excellent driving record) and drug/alcohol test for Maintenance Technician positions. A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) process will be conducted if applicable. All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment results prior to their first day of employment.
