Senior Director, Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:    

The Senior Director Manufacturing Operations is responsible for the development and execution of world-class manufacturing, and technology capabilities (per company strategy) leading to optimal company economics, maximized by execution of systems and processes that minimize constraints (i.e.; improve business process “velocity”).  This position is responsible for the oversight of manufacturing, and managing the AMS –  Minnetonka facility.

The Senior Director must be highly integrated with internal and external customers to optimize key business processes and overall company economics. Keep sights set on the mission-critical functions and capabilities that AMS needs to be on the leading edge. Key areas of leadership include overseeing design and execution of operations. Meeting financial and economic commitments; building organizational support and competence; evaluation of emerging technologies while maximizing use of existing technologies; achieving operational excellence through leveraging efficiencies in process & material flow; work and material flow and capacity; thorough due diligence, integration and stabilization stages of M&A and organic growth opportunities.

All positions are responsible for following applicable AMS policies and procedures as defined by their manager.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT & EXECUTION*

  • Establish and maintain the strategic direction for AMS Operations to achieve the business goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Direct the analysis, planning and implementation of the site’s strategies required to maximize AMS opportunities.
  • Communicate at all levels in the organization to ensure that strategic plans are clearly understood and the vision, values and philosophy of the company are maintained.
  • Build coalitions internally and with other Federal agencies, State and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations to achieve common goals.

2.  LEADERSHIP & MATRIX COLLABORATION*

  • Provide business leadership across all functions and effectively lead the AMS Operations organization.
  • Interact effectively with Finance, IT, Marketing, Regulatory and Clinical to ensure effective plans and strategies.  Partner across all functions internally as well as with key external contacts.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of a diverse group of internal and external resources to achieve key business objectives, with an emphasis on driving positive outcomes through others.
  • Ensure that the AMS Operations organization has the flexibility to move swiftly and decisively to take advantage of market opportunities, capable of adjusting strategies and plans to meet changing market and competitive conditions.
  • Lead and mentor the team, ensuring that the organization is staffed with highly motivated and skilled professionals who contribute to the overall AMS mission.
  • Build an environment where employees are encouraged to express their points of view and to raise tough issues before they become crises
  • Lead the budget planning process, expense management and identify capital investment requirements.

3.  PRODUCT FORECASTING PROCESS & PRODUCTION PLANNING*

  • Provide up-to-date production schedules to meet supply requirements for change in inventory valuation, COGS, excess and obsolescence exposure.
  • Procure data analysis for collaborative planning and logistics, including capacity modeling, information/process re-engineering, and performance metrics analysis/implementation.

4.  MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS*

  • Monitor, communicate trends, and introduce new process and manufacturing opportunities of strategic importance to the company.
  • Identify, evaluate and provide recommendations regarding short and long term global operation needs.
  • Lead the production functions of AMS Operations.
  • Oversee manufacturing system audits, development and implementation. 
  • Product Quality Control Definitions and Program Execution
  • Oversee product cost planning, methods, overhead allocations, strategic cost management, and capacity planning.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations governing OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements. 
  • Ensure GMP regulations, FDA Quality System Requirements, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and the EN46001 regulations are implemented and maintained.

5. MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING*

  • Develop and execute a strategy to achieve the Operations Engineering vision of process discipline and ownership:
  • Process adherence and compliance in the factory
  • Establish current and future state core technology competencies
  • Ensure the appropriate equipment, technology, and process flow is in place on the factory floor in alignment with core competencies
  • Ensure stable and consistent manufacturing metrics (yields, lead times, scrap cost, etc)
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a Manager of Engineering and ensure the same of the team of engineers and technicians. 
  • Represent operations strategic position on process remediation and is responsible for the quality of remediation activities performed by operations engineering.
  • Oversee day-to-day engineering support of the floor.
  • Work closely with Process Development & Continuation Engineering on transfer of projects into operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:

  • BSME or BS degree in Engineering,  Physics, Life Science or related field required
  • Graduate degree highly preferred

Experience: 

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a global manufacturing/distribution environment, managing domestic and global operation initiatives with multiple product lines
  • Minimum 8 years of effective management experience including the oversight of senior leaders
  • Management of a manufacturing plant preferred
  • Multiple product realization partnerships with R&D that lead to successful product commercialization
  • Proven experience leading major change initiatives involving evaluation of systems, process, structures, locations and people
  • Proven success with financial planning, forecast modeling, and budget management
  • Experience in fully utilizing an integrated global ERP system
  • Proven success with financial planning, forecast modeling, and budget management

Skills:

  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and analysis in developing new strategies and initiatives. Proven track record of anticipating future consequences and trends.
  • Excellent business acumen, which includes judgment and the ability to manage human, financial, and information resources strategically.
  • Ability to establish immediate credibility at all levels, inside and outside the organization; build strong relationships across global AMS
  • Proven leadership skills to effectively lead, develop and coach a high performing team, including the ability to run interference for the team by eliminating obstacles that slow down or impede effectiveness.
  • Ability to establish a common cause and a shared mindset.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a changing, growing environment with multiple key priorities
  • Action-oriented, well organized and capable of influencing and leading others to affect successful outcomes 
  • Ability to quickly gain extensive knowledge and understanding of AMS, its products, business operations and marketplace issues and opportunities
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of Supply Chain Management processes
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of GMP and ISO regulations
  • Strong knowledge of project management technologies
  • Making decisions with high integrity
  • Makes decisions based upon a balance of analysis, wisdom, experience, judgment and high integrity

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
