DeKalb Workforce Development Introduces
DeKalb County Learn and Earn On-the-Job Training Program
DECATUR – DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis announces the introduction of DeKalb Workforce Development’s (DWD) DeKalb County Learn and Earn On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program! The program is designed to provide paid OJT, to Workforce Investment Act (WIA) eligible dislocated worker and adult customers seeking employment with the county.
As part of the OJT agreement, employers must agree to hire eligible individuals, provide them with skills training over a specific period of time, and pay wages at the same rate as similarly situated employees. In exchange, the employer is eligible to receive a subsidy of up to 50 percent of the OJT employee’s wages to cover the costs of training for up to a 90-day period. This subsidy is provided by DWD and the project will be 100 percent federally funded through the WIA of 1998 (WIA).
OJT provides significant advantages for both employers and workers. Employers are able to minimize the upfront costs of training and supervision for new employees and are afforded the flexibility to ensure training is aligned with the actual skill requirements of the job. Employers also realize immediate gains in productivity as workers learn on the job. The workers benefit from employment and the immediate gain of income they will receive even during the training process.
Participant eligibility will be determined during an application process. Adult and dislocated workers will be pre-screened by DeKalb County’s Human Resources Department and subsequently by DWD to ensure WIA eligibility for the program. After an assessment and development of an employment training plan, those meeting the eligibility requirements will be hired for open positions at competitive salaries.
The program will benefit both DeKalb County Government and residents. With funding availability, OJT will be offered to additional employers.
