Technical Underwriting Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:  This is a management position that provides guidance and leadership to Underwriting Operations management and staff.  The position provides independent, analytical and project management duties in support of Underwriting Operations that are highly technical in nature.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  THE FOLLOWING ARE THE USUAL, BASIC AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION.  THESE FUNCTIONS ARE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF ALL RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES, AND SKILLS REQUIRED.

  • Model ethical behavior and execute job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values and ethics policies
  • Resolve or recommend changes to standardize processes and procedures throughout the Underwriting Organization representing significant underwriting and operational issues
  • Develop and implement underwriting projects and initiatives aimed at improving workflows to facilitate the most efficient use of resources, for both commercial and personal lines
  • Analyze effectiveness of underwriting rules and partner with Product Development Department on the development, filing and implementation of suggested revisions
  • Work with Quality Assurance and Training to ensure that company policy and procedure is both understood and followed in underwriting handling
  • Work with Underwriting Training to assist in creating, developing, and delivering technical training material to Underwriting personnel
  • Develop and provide management with regular updates, related project documentation and analytic reports, when requested
  • Prioritize projects and monitor project activities to ensure they support department strategy, meet deadlines and secure timely completion
  • Support the monitoring of statutory and regulatory changes impacting the Underwriting Organization and maintain strong working relationships with Citizens’ Legal, Public Affairs, Corporate Analytics, Consumer and Agency Services and Claim departments to communicate changes to the organization and recommend responses when appropriate   
  • Serve as liaison and subject matter expert between underwriting staff, vendors, and project team members from other business departments and external sites
  • May be responsible for managing staff, which includes recruiting, hiring, training, conducting performance reviews, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication, leadership and organizational skills
  • Project and program development/management skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook
  • Comprehensive knowledge of multi-peril coverages and various policy types including both current and previous ISO based policies and endorsements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of property and casualty insurance marketplace including matters of coverage, valuation assessment, legal climate and property insurance laws
  • Solid interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to travel occasionally

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management or related field; OR 4 years relevant experience OR a combination of college education and experience equivalent to 4 years
  • 5 or more years of progressively responsible professional Underwriting experience (i.e., at the underwriter level or above)
  • 3 or more years of experience conducting project work involving strategic initiatives or new program development in the property and casualty industry   

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree
  • 8 or more years of progressively responsible professional Underwriting experience (i.e., at the underwriter level or above)
  • 5 or more years of experience conducting project work involving strategic initiatives or new program development in the property and casualty industry
  • Experience in both personal and commercial lines
  • Thorough knowledge of products, systems, processes, and procedures as they relate to Underwriting and agents
  • Possession of IIA Certificate in General Insurance, CPCU, AU or CIC

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

This position requires the ability to walk around business unit to observe performance and provide technical assistance to staff as required and ability to sit for long periods of time; hear and converse over the telephone and key frequently on a computer (4 to 6 or more hours per day).  Position may require occasional overnight travel.
