General

D-Camps West Counsellors will work closely facility counselling staff to deliver quality programs to campers across the Associations Western Canada Summer Camp Programs.

This role includes Camp Kakhamela in BC, Camp Jean Nelson in Alberta

 

Responsibilities

  • To work in partnership with facility counselling staff as cabin/ team counsellor
  • Ensuring the successful, mission-oriented delivery of day-to-day programs
  • To understand and adapt to the differing structure and needs of each camp
  • Participating in all programs and activities with camper group
  • Assisting campers in learning and adjusting to the daily routine
  • Ensuring that all campers follow camp rules, respecting each other and the facility
  • To be an active member of the Counselling Team, giving input, suggestions and problem solving
  • Providing supervision at mealtimes, bedtimes, and any unstructured times
  • Helping campers monitor blood sugars, especially during high impact activities
  • To reside in dorms with assigned camper group
  • Provides front-line onsite support to Association and facility staff in the start-up, execution, and closing of camp programs
  • To be an active member of the D-Camps West team, giving input, suggestions and problem solving
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Coordinator

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment
  • Adaptable to changing camp environments and staffing structures
  • Ability work as a team member
  • Ability to take initiative and use good judgment to solve and/or respond to requests for information
  • Demonstrated passion for the impact of camp on children

 

Education & Experience

  • Preference to those that have taken some form of a leadership program through their community, school, D-Camps , or another camp
  • A thorough understanding of type 1 diabetes and it’s physiological, social, and emotional impacts
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification required

 

Screening Requirements

The candidate for this position must adhere to the following:

  • Review and sign the Canadian Diabetes Association Code of Conduct Declaration
  • Provision of references
  • Conforms to the Canadian Diabetes Association requirements for a police record check and/or vulnerable sector search

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is located onsite at the Association’s summer children’s camp programs
  • Counsellors must be prepared to reside in dorms with campers
  • Must be available to live onsite at outdoor camping facilities during the operation of camping programs
  • Requires exertion of physical or sensory efforts resulting in slight fatigue, strain or risk of injury
